Fort Worth has 50 communities built specifically for residents 55 and older, ranging from independent-living apartment complexes with light amenities to communities set up for people who want more support built into daily life. These are different from standard apartments in a few key ways: age-restricted occupancy rules, single-story or elevator-served layouts, grab bars and wider doorways in units, and on-site programming like fitness classes, card rooms, or scheduled outings. Most of these properties are independent living, meaning residents live on their own but get the benefit of a community built around their stage of life, not skilled nursing or memory care.
What to look for before you sign a lease
Start with the basics: is the community age-restricted (55+) or age-targeted but open to all ages, and does that matter to you? Check unit layouts for step-free access, walk-in showers, and emergency pull cords. Ask what's included in rent versus billed separately: utilities, Wi-Fi, meals, transportation to appointments or grocery stores. Walk the grounds at different times of day to see how well-lit and maintained common areas are, and ask current residents (not just staff) how maintenance requests get handled and how often social activities actually run versus what's advertised.
How we rank these communities
Our scoring weighs verified resident feedback, responsiveness of management, cleanliness and upkeep of common areas, and value relative to what's included in rent.
